CHINA VISIT 2010 BEIJING CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE $10K ANNUALLY ($30K 3 YEAR GRANT)
Haban- Confucius Institute and USF World -Confucius Grant
While at the Taking Next Steps International Conference with the College Board in Beijing and then Jilin Province (Changchuan), I took time to capture some candid sketches of life at eye level on the streets of the major cities. It was interesting to see thousands of years of culture coexisting. Despite the advancements in technology, some were still using centuries old technologies like mules and wagons.
Participating in this conference with the College Board and USF resulted in a multi-year $10K(Annually) grant from the Haban to provide resources for the Confucius Classroom for Mandarin Chinese.
EVERYDAY LIFE ON THE STREET OF BEIJING, CHINA
watercolor on paper (2010)
This visit is where I developed an interest in observing everyday people, the fabric of a community developed my interest in ethnographic research practices. My dissertation was based on working within an existing population, but this experience broadened my thinking to just observing opposed to doing applied research- which is to implement a program or treatment on a specific population. Art was the best information gathering tool for documenting the experience. I learned more by illustrating opposed to collecting data.
LIFE ON THE STREETS OF BEIJING

As we traveled from school to school and the Confucius Institute, I observed how ordinary people navigated congested streets, crowded markets, and ancient infrastructure.
